Network Traffic Reduction in Haptic Telepresence Systems by Deadband Control
نویسندگان
چکیده
Current haptic (force feedback) telepresence systems operated over a communication network as, e.g. the Internet, require high packet rates for the transmission of the command and sensor signals. We propose a novel approach to reduce the network traffic by means of deadband control. Data packets are only sent if the sampled signal changes more than a given threshold value. Passivity based estimation methods are introduced to reconstruct the missing values for the resulting empty sampling instances at the receiver. Thereby the passivity/stability of the overall system is achieved. Experiments are conducted in order to show the validity of our approach.

Parsimonious Data Transmission in Haptic Telepresence Systems
Limited communication resources represent a major challenge in networked telepresence and teleaction systems. Video and audio compression schemes are well advanced employing models of human perception. In contrast to that haptic data reduction schemes are rather poorly treated in the known literature. This paper introduces a novel approach to reduce network traffic in haptic telepresence system...

Multimodal telepresence and teleaction systems enable a human operator to perform in remote environments through a telerobot and a communication network. The focus of this article is on the networked haptic (force feedback) control system with the key challenges of stability and transparency. Transparency is achieved if the human cannot distinguish between direct and teleinteraction. Human perc...

In telepresence and teleaction (TPTA) systems, the transmission of haptic signals puts high demands on the applied signal processing and communication procedures. When running a TPTA session across a packet-based communication network (e.g. Internet), minimizing the end-to-end delay results in packet rates of up to the applied sampling rate of the local control loops at the human system interfa...
